A driveshaft transfers power from your gearbox to the wheels, so when it starts to fail you’ll usually feel it before you understand it. Driveshaft repair covers worn universal joints, damaged CV joints, split boots and bent or vibrating shafts. If your car shudders under load, clunks when you pull away, or makes a clicking noise on tight corners, that’s the kind of thing we look at every week at our Mitchell workshop in north Canberra. Left alone, a tired driveshaft can leave you stranded, so it pays to get it checked early.

What Are the Warning Signs You Need a Driveshaft Repair?

Driveshaft problems tend to creep in, then get worse quickly. The trouble is people often put up with the early symptoms until the part finally gives out. Catching it sooner means a smaller, cheaper job.

  • Clicking or knocking on turns: a rhythmic click when cornering usually points to a worn outer CV joint.
  • Vibration that builds with speed: a shudder through the floor or seat, especially under acceleration, can mean a bent shaft or failing joint.
  • A clunk when shifting into gear or pulling away: often a sign of excess play in a universal joint.
  • Grease on the inside of a wheel or under the car: a split CV boot flinging grease out, which lets dirt and water destroy the joint.
  • A shaking steering wheel under load: on front-wheel-drive cars this can trace back to a worn driveshaft rather than the steering itself.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth booking in. A torn boot caught early might only need a reboot and regrease. Ignore it, and the joint itself wears out, which means a full replacement.

What Happens During a Driveshaft Repair at Our Mitchell Workshop

We start by getting the car up on the hoist and checking the shaft, joints and boots by hand. A lot of driveshaft faults can be found by feel, checking for play in the universal and CV joints and looking for split or weeping boots. We’ll spin the wheels, listen for clicking, and inspect the centre bearing on longer shafts.

From there we tell you what we’ve found in plain English. Sometimes it’s a single CV boot and a fresh pack of grease. Other times a joint has worn past the point of saving and the shaft needs replacing. We’ll explain the difference, what it’ll cost, and what can safely wait if money’s tight that week. When we do replace parts, we fit quality components and use proper grade greases and oils such as Penrite where they apply, not the cheapest no-name stock.

Once the repair or replacement is done, we road test the car to make sure the noise and vibration are gone and everything’s torqued and seated properly.

What Affects the Cost and Time of Driveshaft Replacement?

No two driveshaft jobs are identical, so the price moves with the work involved. A few things drive it:

  • What’s actually worn: a single boot reboot is a smaller job than a full driveshaft replacement.
  • Front or rear, single or two-piece: rear shafts with centre bearings take more labour.
  • Parts availability: common cars have shafts on the shelf; less common models may need ordering, which adds a day or two.
  • OEM versus quality aftermarket: we’ll talk you through the options so you can pick what suits your budget and how long you plan to keep the car.

We won’t guess a figure over the phone for something we haven’t seen. Once it’s on the hoist and we know what’s worn, you’ll get a clear quote before we start any work. No surprises on the invoice.

Why Drivers Around Canberra Choose ZP Automotive

We’re an independent, owner-operated workshop, and Brendan brings 10+ years in the trade to every job on the bench. You deal directly with the mechanic doing the work, not a service advisor reading off an upsell script. That means honest advice, fair pricing without dealership labour rates, and a straight answer about what’s wrong and what can wait.

Driveshaft work often turns up alongside other jobs, and we cover a fair bit under one roof: brakes, logbook servicing that keeps your manufacturer warranty intact, ACT rego inspections, air conditioning servicing and engine diagnostics. If you’re stuck with a car that won’t move, we also do vehicle lockout and roadside help. It’s a family-run feel, and we’re genuinely not here to sell you parts you don’t need.

If your car’s clunking, shuddering or clicking on corners, use Call & Book Now to book it in, or Claim Your Free Inspection online. We look after drivers across Mitchell and north Canberra and we’ll tell you straight what your driveshaft needs.

Got Questions? We Have Answers

Browse the common questions below. If yours isn't listed, give us a call and we'll give you a straight answer.

The most common signs are a clunking or clicking noise when accelerating or turning, vibrations through the floor or seat that get worse at higher speeds, and a shudder when pulling away from a stop. You might also notice grease splattered inside your wheel arch, which usually means a CV boot has split and the joint is losing lubrication. Any of these symptoms are worth getting looked at promptly, since a worn driveshaft puts extra stress on surrounding components the longer it runs.

Not for long. A failing driveshaft can seize, separate, or cause you to lose drive power without much warning. In a worst case, a driveshaft that lets go completely can drop and contact the road surface while the vehicle is moving. If you are hearing clunking, feeling strong vibrations, or noticing difficulty accelerating smoothly, we would strongly recommend getting the vehicle inspected before driving it any further than necessary.

Most driveshaft issues come back to worn or damaged CV joints and split CV boots. The boots are rubber sleeves that keep grease in and dirt out of the joint. Once a boot cracks, the joint runs dry, wears quickly, and eventually fails. Age, high kilometres, rough roads, and the occasional kerb strike or pothole can all accelerate this process. Four-wheel drive vehicles that do off-road work tend to see CV joint wear earlier than city-driven cars.

We start by putting the vehicle on the hoist and doing a proper inspection of the driveshaft, CV joints, boots, and related components. From there we will advise whether a boot replacement, CV joint replacement, or full shaft replacement is the right call. The old components are removed, the new parts are fitted and packed with fresh grease, and everything is reassembled and torqued to spec. We check for smooth operation before the car comes off the hoist.

A CV boot replacement or single CV joint swap can often be completed in a couple of hours. A full driveshaft replacement generally takes a bit longer depending on the vehicle and whether front or rear shafts are involved. We aim to turn most driveshaft jobs around on the same day where parts are available. When you book in with us in Mitchell, we can give you a clearer time estimate once we know what the vehicle needs.

The main variables are whether you need a boot kit, a CV joint, or a complete shaft replacement, and whether one or both sides are affected. The vehicle make and model also matters, since some shafts are straightforward to access and others require more labour. We will always inspect the shaft and joints first and give you a clear price before any work begins. No surprises, no upsell scripts.

Generally, no. ACCC guidance indicates that Australian consumers are not required to have their vehicle serviced exclusively at a dealership to maintain a manufacturer warranty, provided the work is carried out properly and with quality parts. This is general information, not legal advice, so we do recommend checking your specific warranty conditions if you are unsure. We use quality parts suited to your vehicle and document all work clearly, which supports any warranty record you need to maintain.

A split CV boot itself cannot be patched. Once it has torn, the joint has likely been running without adequate grease and may have already picked up dirt and moisture. In some cases, if the boot is caught early and the joint still feels smooth with no play, a boot replacement and repack can extend the life of the joint significantly. If the joint is worn or has developed notchy movement, we will recommend replacing the joint along with the boot.

A visual check of the CV boots is worth doing at every regular service. Catching a small crack early means you can replace the boot before the joint is damaged, which is significantly cheaper than a full joint or shaft replacement. For vehicles used heavily or on unsealed roads, more frequent checks make sense. We include a driveshaft and boot inspection as part of our logbook services, so if you are keeping up with servicing the basics should not be missed.

In most cases, a standard front driveshaft replacement on a front-wheel drive vehicle does not require a wheel alignment afterwards. However, if the repair involved removing suspension components or if the vehicle had existing alignment issues, it is worth checking. We will let you know during the inspection whether alignment is something you should consider based on your specific vehicle and what we find on the hoist. We will not recommend it unless there is a genuine reason.
