A radiator flush clears out the old coolant, rust, and gunk that build up in your cooling system over time. Fresh coolant goes back in, and your engine has a fighting chance of staying at the right temperature on hot Canberra days. We do radiator flushes at our workshop here in Mitchell, and it’s one of those jobs that’s cheap insurance against an expensive overheating bill down the track. Old coolant loses its rust-fighting additives and starts to break down, which is when corrosion and blockages creep in.

When Does Your Car Need a Radiator Flush?

Coolant doesn’t last forever. Most manufacturers set a replacement interval somewhere between every two and five years, or by kilometres, and it’s worth sticking to that. If you can’t remember the last time the coolant was changed, it’s probably overdue.

Here are the signs we see come through the door:

  • The temperature gauge creeping up higher than normal, especially in stop-start traffic or on a hot day
  • Coolant that looks rusty, muddy, or brown instead of its proper green, red, or orange colour
  • A sweet smell from the engine bay, or steam coming from under the bonnet
  • The heater blowing cool air when it should be warm
  • Sludge or floating bits visible in the coolant reservoir

If your temperature gauge is in the red right now, don’t keep driving. Pull over safely, let the engine cool, and give us a call. Overheating can warp a head gasket fast, and that’s a far bigger job than a flush.

What Happens During a Radiator Flush at Our Mitchell Workshop

We start by checking the cooling system properly before we touch anything. That means looking at the radiator, hoses, water pump, and the condition of the existing coolant. A flush is the right fix for tired or contaminated coolant, but if there’s a leaking hose or a failing water pump, we’ll tell you straight so you’re not paying for a flush that won’t solve the real problem.

The flush itself works like this:

  • We drain the old coolant out of the radiator and engine block
  • We run a cleaning flush through the system to lift out rust, scale, and old residue
  • We check the radiator, cap, and hoses for leaks or weak spots while the system’s open
  • We refill with fresh coolant mixed to the right ratio for your vehicle, using quality product
  • We bleed out trapped air and check the system holds temperature properly before you leave

We use quality coolant and parts, brands like Penrite, not the cheapest no-name stock that breaks down early. Getting the coolant type and mix right matters, because the wrong fluid can cause corrosion in some engines.

What Affects the Cost and Time of a Coolant Flush?

A straightforward flush on a common car is a quick job. A few things can shift the price and time, and we’ll always talk it through before we start:

  • The size and type of your cooling system, since larger engines hold more coolant
  • The specific coolant your vehicle needs, as some require particular long-life or OEM-spec fluid
  • How much corrosion or sludge has built up, which can mean extra flushing
  • Whether we find a worn hose, a tired cap, or a leak that’s worth sorting while we’re in there

We don’t run dealership labour rates, and we won’t pad the bill with parts you don’t need. If we spot something that can safely wait, we’ll say so. You’ll know what it costs before we pick up a spanner.

Why Have ZP Automotive Do Your Radiator Flush?

No service advisor, no upsell scripts, no jargon you didn’t ask for. Just honest advice on what’s wrong, what it’ll cost, and what can wait.

Got Questions? We Have Answers

Browse the common questions below. If yours isn't listed, give us a call and we'll give you a straight answer.

Most vehicles benefit from a radiator flush every two to five years, depending on the make, model, and type of coolant used. Some modern coolants are rated for longer service intervals, while older vehicles or those with mixed coolant types may need attention sooner. A good rule of thumb is to check the condition of your coolant at each service. If it looks discoloured, smells burnt, or has debris floating in it, it’s worth having the system inspected regardless of the time interval.

We drain the old coolant from the system, then flush the radiator and cooling passages with fresh water or a dedicated flush solution to clear out built-up deposits, rust, and old additive residue. Once the system is clean, we refill it with fresh coolant mixed to the correct ratio for your vehicle. We also check hoses, the radiator cap, and connections while we have the system open. The whole process typically takes one to two hours depending on the vehicle.

Coolant degrades as its corrosion inhibitors are used up protecting the metal surfaces inside your engine and radiator. Heat cycling, small amounts of combustion gas entering the cooling system, and mixing incompatible coolant types all speed up this process. Once the inhibitors are depleted, the coolant becomes acidic and starts attacking aluminium components, rubber hoses, and the water pump rather than protecting them. That’s why flushing and replacing the fluid matters, not just topping up the reservoir.

Watch for the temperature gauge climbing higher than usual, coolant warning lights on the dash, a sweet or burnt smell from the engine bay, visible discolouration in the overflow reservoir, or any sign of leaks under the car after it’s been parked. Overheating, even briefly, can cause serious engine damage quickly. If your car is running hot or you’re not sure when the coolant was last changed, it’s worth getting it checked sooner rather than later.

The cost depends on the vehicle’s cooling system capacity, the type of coolant specified for your car, and whether any additional work is needed once the system is inspected. Some vehicles require specific coolant formulations that cost more than standard green or blue antifreeze. We’ll tell you what’s needed and what it will cost before any work begins, so there are no surprises. We don’t quote one price and charge another.

Degraded coolant loses its ability to prevent corrosion, and that corrosion builds up inside the radiator, heater core, and engine passages. Over time, this causes blockages that restrict coolant flow, leading to overheating. In serious cases, a neglected cooling system can contribute to head gasket failure, which is a significantly more expensive repair than a flush. Staying on top of coolant condition is one of the more cost-effective ways to protect a high-mileage engine.

Under ACCC guidance, Australian consumer law generally does not require you to use a dealership for routine servicing in order to maintain your new-car warranty, provided the work is carried out correctly and the right parts and fluids are used. This is general information and not legal advice, so it’s worth checking your specific warranty terms if you’re unsure. At our Mitchell workshop, we use quality coolant products and document the service properly so your records remain in order.

Yes, if your vehicle’s logbook specifies a coolant change or cooling system inspection at a particular interval, we can carry that out as part of the scheduled service and record it in your logbook. We follow manufacturer-specified fluid types and service requirements so the logbook stamp reflects work done to the correct standard. If you’re not sure whether your current service interval includes a coolant flush, bring your logbook in and we’ll go through it with you.
